  • ✓The 5 quickest ways to improve your credit starting today
  • ✓What not to do if you’re planning to apply soon

How credit scores work

And what lenders really care about.

Lenders don’t just care about the number on your credit file. Your score on ClearScore or Experian is a rough guide — not a deal-breaker.

What matters most

  • ✓Payment history — have you paid on time?
  • ✓Credit use — are you maxed out?
  • ✓Credit mix — different types of accounts help
  • ✓Defaults or CCJs — older ones matter less
  • ✓Stability — electoral roll, same address, job history

Common myths

  • ✗“No credit cards means a perfect score.” → Not true.
  • ✗“Paid a default = it disappears.” → It still shows for 6 years.
  • ✗“My Experian score is high = I’m fine.” → Lenders have their own internal systems.

What not to do before applying
