Bank of England Raises UK Interest Rates: Impact on Mortgages and Your Finance
The Bank of England has taken a significant step by raising interest rates by 0.25% to 5.25%, reaching its highest level in 15 years. This move comes as the Bank aims to tackle high inflation, which remains nearly four times higher than its target of 2%. As experts widely anticipated this rate hike, it marks the 14th consecutive increase in interest rates.
The decision was not without contention, with the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voting in a three-way split. Six policymakers favoured the 0.25% rate rise, including Governor Andrew Bailey and Chief Economist Huw Pill, among others. Two committee members voted for a more substantial 0.5 percentage point increase, while one member sought to keep the rate steady at 5%.
With interest rates set to remain high for at least two years, the financial landscape is poised for significant changes. The Bank's forecast indicates that interest rates may peak at 6.5%, although some experts predict a lower pinnacle of 5.75% due to recent data on inflation and wage growth.
The hike will also have a significant impact on mortgage rates, as higher rates are already starting to weigh on the UK property sector, causing prices to experience the most substantial decline since 2009. For the roughly 150,000 borrowers on tracker or variable rate mortgages in London, today's hike means an instant increase in mortgage payments. However, for the majority of homeowners who are on fixed-rate deals, the effect will not be immediate; you will only feel the impact when your fixed term expires.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said: “If we stick to the plan, the Bank forecasts inflation will be below 3% in a year's time without the economy falling into a recession.
“But that doesn't mean it's easy for families facing higher mortgage bills so we will continue to do what we can to help households."
